Two Neat (to me anyway!) Finds

On one of the Yahoo! Groups I am a member of someone asked for help locating a Project Gutenberg similar site for books in German. Wow! What a great idea! So, without actually reading the responses, I went off on a search. It was a bit tricky to find. Finally, through a link at About.com the elusive Projekt Gutenberg-DE was located! Alas, I could have saved myself the searching, had I read the replies to the poster. It is in German but there is a vast collection here as at the English Project Gutenberg site. I thought it was an excellent find! My husband has some German in his bloodline (his family is very proud of their German heritage) and my ds just loves the idea of learning German.

The other 'find' was sent to my email some days ago and I just ignored it or something. I don't recall even seeing it honestly but today, one of the follow up emails caught my eye. I really should pay more attention! It is from the Homeschool Buyers Co-op (great, GREAT site!) and summer reading. They are putting on Summer Fun Month with great deals (they mean GREAT deals!), fun photography contests and reading program. The last one, the summer reading program is what caught my eye. It is based on your kids' reading times. Go to the record page and input the number of hours your child read on a certain day, the book(s)/author(s) and enter your email address. I think that the number of recorded hours is well over 9,000 now! There are prizes awarded randomly every week in June, July and August for a $15 gift certificate to Amazon, with a grand prize winner being drawn in September for an iPad. There is also a Reading Champion Certificate that will be available at the end of the summer for presenting to your child- with the number of hours AND the books read over the summer! I thought that was cool. My kids love 'awards'.

So those are my two 'finds' of the day. Perhaps more will find their way to me so that I can share with you :)

1000 Good Books List @ Classical Homeschooling.org

This link was posted at the AmblesideOnline Yahoo! Group in a discussion of what would be considered "twaddle" when looking for good books for our kids and ourselves. AmblesideOnline group is one of my favorite. Check out this list that is pretty extensive and broken down by reading levels. As mentioned on the site, the list is not exhaustive; there are doubtless many more books that would be considered Great and not twaddle.

Not only are the books broken down by reading level but also types of books. For instance, the Primary Reading Level 1-3 includes Bible, Anthologies & Poetry, Holiday, Picture, Beginning Readers, Easy Readers, and Advanced Readers. The Junior Reading Level 7-9 includes Anthologies & Poetry, Holiday Books, Literature and Advanced Literature.

Although this list is compiled by those that follow the Trivium method of teaching, it does include many books that those who follow any method (Charlotte Mason, Eclectic, Thomas Jefferson Education, Unschooling, etc) could find useful.

Methods of Education*:
Thomas Jefferson Education: TJED Online, Wikipedia (needs references), Homeschooling Unlimited, New Foundations, Homeschool Diner

*There are many other methods of schooling, I only linked ones that I specifically mentioned in my post. There are also an immense number of sites that would give information about each of these methods, I only included some. Here are some others.

History Freebie- Deadline July 2, 2010

Another history freebie. This one is available as a download and is from American Vision. I am actually trying to read this myself. Cynthia from Allbright News says that she feels it would be a great addition to American History Study. It might be :)

*short wee little note: There are typos! Lol, I'm a bit picky on those kind of things...but I am still enjoying it so far...REAL review coming soon!!

History Freebie- Deadline July 1, 2010- Some extra comments

I posted about the free DVD being given away to schools/teachers/principals a while back because it is great to be able to receive free items when homeschooling. And who doesn't like the History Channel!? *you don't? well you might just like the post then*

This has been spreading like wildfire and there is still time to sign up for the free DVD (which I recommend). You can find my post here.

So where am I going with this post?? Okay, so one reason a lot of people choose to homeschool is because they do not wish for their children to be fed inaccurate information in any subject area (that's obviously not the only reason that people choose to homeschool- just one possible one). The History Channel is reputed as an 'authority' in the subject of History so this would be seen as a great opportunity- receive a plethora of information about the United States History from the History Channel.

Some people do not see it that way. For example you can read what Kaitlyn has to say about this DVD being not all it's cracked up to be! (Scroll down a bit until you find it).

One problem with the DVD series, that I can glean from the article, is that it is politically correct and leans towards liberal standards. Personally, I dislike 'politically correct' and I'm a conservative...this DVD might rub me the wrong way- as it did Kaitlyn's father!

But at the same time, I like to see different sides to the story so that I can come to an informed decision. I do not have as much experience with history (definitely not US history) as Kaitlyn's father but I'm not ignorant about history. Here's my take on this: Simply, it's difficult to find historically correct information! I am a history major in college (I want to teach middle school or high school someday) and have studied history quite a bit during the past 5+ years. In that time my college professors have required/suggested/coerced us to watch/read historical documents/documentaries/books/videos and other things that have to do with history (okay not coerced-but it's not like I was going to leave class to avoid it). In that time and watching/reading all those things, I have come to realize: You have to have an open mind but at the same time be ready to find the truth in all these.

The email that was relayed about what Kaitlyn had to say points this out to when she says:
If nothing else, it is an educational experience for a person to see how every topic can be viewed and represented differently and so one opinion, show, or text should never be taken as absolute truth – a good lesson for our homeschoolers to learn.
I can definitely appreciate his credibility with reviewing this DVD: he has taught in public schools, he has a history degree, he is a history buff.
Here's his recommendation:

Watch it, use pieces frugally if [you] really wanted to, but that it wasn't worth it and [you] ought to just disregard it in [your] teaching.

And just to make a point: I am not 'picking' on Kaitlyn's email, it's simply the only negative perspective that I have come across pertaining to the History Channel's DVD series. I am thankful for the review! We watch a lot of History Channel videos in our home because there are many available at Netflix. My dc are 13 and 10 but we still can discuss these videos; what's wrong with this picture; what did they leave out; did they have to include that; how accurate is this presentation? We don't just take it at face value, no matter who is giving the information. It usually leads to investigating further into other accounts of the same time period or area.

Cooking Class via Real Life

On Friday night the kids made dinner- all by themselves! That included 'dessert'.

Since it was National Taco Day (according to some calendar that Lee had found long ago and marked up her current calendar with) they insisted that we had to have tacos- not burritos like I make on occasion, no- TACOS. So we went to the store and bought a taco making "kit", tomatoes, and ground beef *we usually eat ground turkey but they thought it should be beef this time.*

Before dinner was started however, they wanted to make fruit salad for dessert. It was to be made simply out of apples and whipped topping because that's all we had I thought but I found some frozen peaches and strawberries in the freezer. They cut the apples, cut the seeds out, rinsed them and put them in a bowl. Next they each cut some frozen peaches and strawberries to put in with the apples. They kept asking me, "Is that enough?" but I would say, "You're doing fine, you be the judge." After all was sliced and mixed in the bowl, they added a few scoopfuls of whipped topping. (Again, "Is that enough?" lol) The fruit salad was covered and put in the refrigerator to chill until after dinner.

For dinner, Jeff opened the 'kit' and took out all the contents. He read the instructions out loud and decided, "The meat has to be cooked before anything." That was Lee's job. For some reason she loves to brown meat. So while she was working on that, Jeff again read the instructions. After the meat was browned it said to drain it but because we bought 90% lean meat there was next to nothing to drain so I suggested skipping that step. Jeff dumped in the seasoning packet contents that came with the kit into the meat and also measured out 2/3 cup of water and poured that into the frying pan. Lee mixed it all and let it set on med/low heat for a few minutes until most of the liquid was 'absorbed' (I think it just evaporated!). Meanwhile, Lee 'shredded' (aka, cut into small pieces) the lettuce and Jeff cut up a tomato into small pieces for the topping. Lee transferred the taco sauce from the pouch to a small dish so that it could be used easier.

When the meat was done she took it off the burner (and turned off the burner ;), took the taco shells out of the packaging and heated the soft shells in the microwave on a small plate for about 30 seconds. The hard shells were just set on top of the soft shells. Most of us do not like hard shells for 'tacos'. Lee wanted to try a double taco this time (soft shell on the outside of the hard shell, with the fillings inside the hard shell) so she got out some left over burrito filling to use as 'glue' for the soft shell to stick to the hard shell. In case anyone else wanted to try it as well, she heated it up in the microwave and set it out with the other toppings.

It was great. They found dishes for each of the toppings- all in the perfect sized dish for better serving. And when dinner was all done, Jeff put everything away. He found containers for each item, based on how much was left and put them all away in the fridge.

It was great. I love when they do that :)

What, where'd that come from!?

It seems that somehow I have the money for my internet...where did it come from? I don't want to think negatively and my first thought was that it is a blessing from God because it is something that I asked for guidance with, help with (to turn it off or keep it, where the money would come from, help to keep it reasonable). But at the same time, I also worry (bad me I know) that it is not a blessing but a disguised fiasco waiting to happen. I have problems with limiting my net time. Although I feel that I have done exceptionally well the last few weeks. Perhaps you've noticed I haven't even been here...and if you didn't notice, well, that's alright ;)
I discontinued a few subscriptions and services that I'd not been using as I used to and yet was still paying for. That could be where the 'extra' money came from... who knows!
What is for certain, I am grateful that I could keep it! I will do my best (and turn to God for the strength I need) to moderate my usage.

I don't have much to write lately. Not sure why...perhaps because nothing much is going on :)

Oh! One thing that I have that is note worthing, I think, is that I have begun to use Homeschool Skedtrack. I have used Homeschool Tracker before (which is a great program) but it corrupted on my computer. It has taken a little while to figure out Homeschool Skedtrack but now I like it :) You might have seen the banner I asked them for up top on my blog ^-^

Day Early...and Internet Disconnection!

Well I have had somewhat of a 'vacation' but I swear we've been busier this week than our entire school year! I will post later today (maybe/probably Monday) about all our activities.
I am actually going to be turning off my internet at home. Just too expensive! I hope that they will offer me a better deal to keep me as a customer ;) but I'm not going to hold my breath. I will go to the library for wireless internet on my computer.
Be back later today or in a couple days!
